Private property or public road reserve
The road reserve is the public land between property boundaries. It usually includes:
- The road itself, including parking lanes
- The kerb and gutter
- The footpath
- The nature strip or verge
Your driveway, front yard and backyard are private property. A bin placed there is usually the simplest option.
City of Coffs Harbour

What to have ready when you ask council
- The street address where the bin will be placed.
- The bin size and dimensions. Our bins range from 2.4 m long × 1.6 m wide (3m³) to 3.5 m long × 1.5 m wide (6m³ and 8m³).
- How long the bin will be there. General waste includes up to 7 days of hire and builders waste up to 14 days.
- Exactly where it will sit, for example on the verge, in a parking lane or on the footpath.

Avoiding the need for a permit
Where possible, place the bin on your driveway or elsewhere on your property. It keeps the bin off public land and out of the way of traffic and pedestrians.
