Excess weight is charged over and above the cost of the skip bin. It only applies to weight above the included allowance.

Why some waste is heavier than it looks
Volume tells you how much space waste takes up. Weight depends on how dense it is. Two loads can fill the same bin and weigh very different amounts.
- Wet green waste. Leaves, grass and branches soak up water. After rain, the same pile of garden waste weighs noticeably more.
- Soil. Soil packs down tightly with very little air between it, and it holds moisture.
- Tiles. Roof and floor tiles are solid, dense and stack closely, so a small pile is heavy.
- Concrete, bricks and blocks. These are some of the densest materials you are likely to handle. A bin can reach its limit with only a layer across the bottom.
Light, bulky waste works the other way. Furniture, cardboard and household clutter fill a bin by volume long before they get near the weight limit.
Heavy materials
Weight limits in the 3m³, 4m³, 6m³ and 8m³ Builders & Renovators bins may restrict the amount of concrete, tiles, bricks, blocks and sand that can go in. Roof tiles, bricks and concrete is a published waste category with restricted volumes.

Do not fill above the rim
Bins must not be filled above the rim. Transporting an overfilled skip bin is an offence, and an additional fee of $80 may apply to overfilled bins. Waste stacked above the rim can also fall off when the bin is lifted.

Tips to stay within the included weight
- Keep green waste dry where you can, for example by covering the pile before rain.
- Mix heavy and light waste rather than filling a bin with soil or rubble alone.
- Tell the team about heavy materials in your booking request.
- Choose a size with an included weight that suits your waste, not just its volume.
